Grade 5 Theory Exam

For piano students of Tony O’Brien Home. Exam Structure. Learning Pathway. Exam Topics.

Try identifying these chords before looking at the answers. In each case you will be told the key(scale), as you would in the Grade 5 exam. In some of the later cases,  some of the chord notes are doubled up to give 4 or 5 note chords, to more closely represent how these questions are are posed in the exam.

If the key note is in the chord, it must be either I or IV  if it’s not, it must be II of V.

Looking at the shape of the chord, identify it as “a” (all thirds) “b” (interval of a third at bottom), “c” (interval of a third at the top).  If        “a” root of chord is at bottom, if “b” root at top, if “c”  root in middle.

Accidentals when key signature given means V chord
